Carlson Quarterly – Q2 2025

June 30, 2025

Market Commentary

The second quarter of 2025 delivered a powerful rebound for equity markets, reversing much of the weakness seen in the first quarter. The S&P 500 gained 10.94%, recovering to new highs, while the Nasdaq‑100 surged 17.86%, fueled by renewed enthusiasm for AI, technology, and growth stocks. Importantly, market strength broadened beyond the technology sector, as cyclical industries, financials, and select small-cap and international stocks began to participate in the rally—an encouraging sign of improving market breadth.

Looking at the first half as a whole, 2025 has been marked by a period of volatility and dramatic shifts in investor sentiment. Markets endured a sharp, tariff-induced selloff in the first quarter as trade tensions escalated, only to stage a rapid recovery in the second quarter after the temporary suspension of some trade restrictions. Through all this, earnings and the economy have remained solid.

As we head into the second half of the year, the outlook remains mixed. The strong rebound in equity prices has created renewed optimism, but valuations are elevated, particularly in cap-weighted indices. Policy uncertainty—especially surrounding trade negotiations, fiscal policy, and potential Federal Reserve actions—continues to present risks. Also, geopolitical tensions remain a persistent backdrop, capable of reintroducing volatility at any time.
